Skills for Life
Year 3 Curriculum
Early Reading and Writing is taught using Read, Write Inc. Phonics.
Read Write Inc. is a method of learning centered around letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing.
Once children have completed this successfully they move on to ‘The Power of Reading’, a programme designed using high quality books to develop children’s writing skills.
We teach Maths by following the DFE approved framework through the use of “Collins Busy Ant Maths”. This is supported by a number of initiatives including Matheletics.
The rest of the curriculum is designed using Learning Journeys to develop themes of study, linking subject ideas where possible.

Clock Tower Project
The school was very lucky to be involved in Gravesham borough Councils Restoration project for the Clock Tower in Gravesend town. Year’s 2, 3 and 4 had a half day workshop with award winning community artist Wendy Daws to create life-size shadow tableaus of the Clock tower’s history. These were all printed as both postcards and large prints that were on display in the Blake Gallery. Year 4 visited the gallery to see the work on display.
The children will soon have a chance to see their images again as they are going to be displayed in the school.
Some Year 5’s also had the chance to have a guided history tour of the town with local historian Christopher Bull and were able to see the stone masons at work up close on the clock tower itself.
Year 3 Interfaith Week
In RE Year 3 have been learning about the Christian church and the festivals that take place inside it. As part of Gravesham’s Inter-faith week they went on a local visit to St Johns Roman Catholic Church. They were guided on a tour of the church by a local parishioner and asked many interesting questions. They also were lucky to talk to the Priest in charge of the church, Father Innocent and impressed him with all their knowledge of the artefacts inside the church.
