Democracy

Pupil voice is significant in regards to life at the Academy. Our pupil-elected Student Voice plays a strong role in our school. They are elected by their form peers and are involved in making the Academy a better place to learn. As part of the student voice election process, pupils learn about forms of government, political ideologies and electoral processes before putting these to the test in a first past the post election. The Student Voice meet once per term to discuss ways in which they think the Academy can move forwards.

Democracy is also integral to processes such as prefect selection and choosing our Head Boy in Year 11 and within the 6th form.

Pupil questionnaires and interviews are also conducted throughout the year, with individual departments encouraged to seek feedback from pupils about their experiences in each subject. We know that the formation of the Student Voice and the active participation of our pupils will sow the seeds for a more sophisticated understanding of democracy in the future.

In term 5, Year 8 students follow a scheme of work in PSHE lessons that looks at each of the British Values.

 

The rule of law   

Our pupils will encounter rules and laws throughout their entire lives. We want our pupils to understand that whether these laws govern the class, the school, the neighbourhood or the country, they are set for good reasons and must be adhered to. We have high expectations about pupil conduct and this is reflected in our Behaviour Policy.  There are rewards for exhibiting good and positive behaviour and consistent demonstration of our values is recognised through such things as housepoints, rewards postcards, student of the term and Headteacher awards.

This understanding of the importance of rules will be consistently reinforced through assemblies and our curriculum. The involvement of our pupils in the creation of the school rules helps them to understand the reasons behind the rules and the consequences if they are broken. There are opportunities within our curriculum to debate and discuss the reasons for laws so that children can recognise the importance of these for their own protection. Throughout the year we welcome visits from members of the wider community including the police and the fire brigade. We believe that clear explanations emphasise the importance of the rule of law for our pupils. Our Skills For Life philosophy

 

Individual liberty

At Greenacre, students are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As an Academy, we educate and provide boundaries for young students to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.  Students are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our eSafety and PSHE schemes of work. E-Safety is taught in term 1 to every year group in ICT lessons.

We have a robust anti bullying culture and behaviour and safety policies in place; this is further reinforced through anti-bullying week, various anti-bullying assemblies and activities throughout the year, in addition to visits from external agencies to present plays and give talks surrounding anti-bullying, which has proved extremely beneficial for our pupils.

Our Year 8 pupils complete the Risk-Avert survey which identifies young people vulnerable to multiple risk-taking behaviours. From the survey, students are selected to take part in a 6-session programme which aims to build resilience, improve their emotional health and well-being, make better decisions, positively manage risk and become more connected to school.

We offer a range of clubs which pupils have the freedom to choose from, based on their interests. At the Academy we believe that valuing choice and freedom in daily school life will foster a value for individual liberty as the children embark upon their adult lives.

 

Mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

At the Academy we offer a culturally rich and diverse curriculum in which all major religions are studied and respected. At the Academy we strongly believe that tolerance is gained through knowledge and understanding. Through our curriculum and the routines of our daily school life, we strive to demonstrate tolerance and help children to become knowledgeable and understanding citizens who can build a better Britain for the future.

We also run a number of trips abroad throughout the academic year from which our students gain valuable experience of other cultures and languages. Our Religious Studies curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures. In Year 8, RE students also cover a scheme of work on extremism of all kinds, including far-right groups, far-left groups, animal rights extremism, eco-extremism and religious extremism.
